Charles Darwin’s image is known around the world but now it has appeared on new lollipops being sold in Shropshire.

Shrewsbury’s most famous son has been immortalised in candy form and is being sold at the town’s Bear Steps Gallery.

It means sweet-toothed people now have a new way to celebrate the work of the man whose theory of evolution changed the world.

The range – designed to mark the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth in Shrewsbury – comes in different colours a range of flavours.

John Henshaw, Shrewsbury Civic Society committee member, said: “We had a meeting about selling these lollies yesterday and have decided to go ahead with them.

“So if you see lots of people walking around town sucking on Darwin lollipops then you know where they came from.

“I hope they will be successful because to begin with we’re doing a trial run.

“I expect they will be something adults, children and visitors to the town can enjoy.

“I’ve not tried them myself but I have seen Karen Lloyd from Bear Steps Gallery with them and they will look good in the shop there.”

Shrewsbury has held a number of events over recent months to mark the special anniversary of Darwin, while others have also been held around the world.

And the festivities will continue throughout the year with the unveiling of Quantum Leap – a piece of public art – and other events to mark the milestone.

What you buy the cookie dough and on cooking it evolves into a biscuit?
I suppose we’ll have Darwin the gingerbeard man from Market Drayton.

I thought Kojak was the iconic father of lollipops!
