£1m plan to spruce up town rail station
Thursday 25th June 2009, 10:33AM BST.
Proposals are being finalised for a major revamp of Telford Central train station, costing nearly £1million.
The plans, involving Network Rail, London Midland and Telford & Wrekin Council, will see the Telford station get a facelift.
Contracts are being finalised. Under the plans, the station’s main building will be re-glazed, new automatic doors will replace the old swing ones and toilets will be given disabled access.
The Shrewsbury platform will get a new shelter and more seating will be installed into the booking hall, while the canopy on platform one will be extended with new signs and extra cycle storage.
People waiting for taxis and buses will also be provided with better waiting facilities. Landscaping of the area are also included in the project
The Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard called the move “good news”.
He said: “I am glad that London Midland and Network Rail have finally listened to my pleas for many years.
“There needs to be improved lighting and access for disabled people as well as making this station far more welcoming.”
Telford MP David Wright also said he had been pressing for improvements for some time. He said rail use was increasing and passengers needed to be given the best possible facilities at Telford Central.
Planners hope work will begin at the start of next year and finish by early summer.
Ed McCrann, of Network Rail, said it was pleased to be working with London Midland and the council to bring improvements to Telford station.
