Letter: Traffic census lessons not learned
Wednesday 24th June 2009, 8:01AM BST.
LETTER: With regard to the chaos caused by the needless waste of taxpayers’ money on the recent traffic census at Preston Island, I wish to say the following concerning Martin Allard’s comments about lessons to be learned.
In the not too distant past a similar survey was carried out in the same spot resulting in similar chaos and congestion.
I was caught up then and would also question the accuracy of data given by people so infuriated at being so inconvenienced by such trivia.
Held up for well over half an hour, I refused to answer any questions and would suggest anyone in the same situation does the same.
If this council employee is incapable of managing such a simple task as a traffic survey, I would question whether he or she should be given the responsibility of spending vast sums of taxpayers’ money reducing congestion in the town.
Having created the problem in the first place by installing forests of traffic lights every few hundred metres and reducing the width of the roads so much that when a bus stops everything stops (Dogpole being a classic example) the council does not need to waste more money on useless surveys.
Apart from Cheltenham, Shrewsbury is one of the most traffic unfriendly places I visit and one of the few places I queue in my car to exit as well as enter.
It takes intelligence and proper planning to solve the congestion problems the council has created.
Clearly no-one in the Frankwell or Shirehall HQ is capable of doing this. Heads should roll.
Dr Andrew France

I do so agree with Dr France. I was travelling the other way and was astonished at the tail back, totally unacceptable. A disgrace.

To get an accurate survey then you have to include rush hour, though they should have taken more care about the queues they caused in doing the survey.
The questions took about two minutes to answer so if you were stuck there thirty minutes by refusing to answer them, then more fool you.
There was no way of doing the survey by counting cars as they were trying to find out where people were coming from and going to. Essential in order to find out whether this NW Relief Road is necessary.
How can you complain about the survey in one paragraph and then complain about the traffic problems in the town in the next. It is only by doing accurate surveys that the traffic planners can properly manage the situation.
Dr Andrew France wants better traffic flow but does not want accurate traffic surveys. I’d suggest you cannot have it both ways.
That said, I do think it is crazy that the traffic survey is only just being carried out, years after the Relief Road was first proposed.

Why not just monitor a months (or years) worth of cars by numbers gathered via the blue cameras all around the county and work patterns out from there?

I totally agree with Dr France, I was travelling to Telford and could not believe the traffic going to Shrewsbury, unfortunately my Partner was made redundant 2 months ago and had an interview that day, we only have one car, on this day he had to drive me to work in Telford and come back to Shrewsbury, if he had gone this route back he would of been late for his interview that day! I am no expert on Traffic but come one everyone know’s this is the main route and how many car’s each day use this road!! Again a complete waste of tax payers money! But there again putting tax payers money in overseas accounts says everything!!!!!
