People in Shropshire were basking in soaring temperatures today as a mini-heatwave swept the country.

Residents woke to a blue, cloudless sky and temperatures were due to reach 24C (75F) with the fine weather set to continue into tomorrow.

The sunshine coincided with day two of the Wimbledon Championships and sparked the use of the new retractable roof to keep out the sun rather than the rain.

Shropshire Star weather expert John Warner urged people to enjoy the weather before storms hit the county nearer the weekend. He said: “It will be dry and sunny all day today. Tonight low cloud will come in off the North Sea so it could start off a bit grey in the morning. But that will burn off and will become warm and sunny again.”

But he warned: “There’s a risk of thundery showers on Friday evening and into Saturday. When the wind drops it will become muggy and humid by the weekend.”

Mr Warner said that over the next week the sunshine would dominate the forecast.
