Meynell happy to link with Torpey

Wednesday 24th June 2009, 3:00PM BST.

New left-back Rhys Meynell today highlighted a re-union with former team-mate Steve Torpey as a prime factor in his move to AFC Telford United.

Highly-regarded winger Torpey joined the Bucks from Stalybridge Celtic earlier in the month, and Meynell – who completed his own move on Monday evening – jumped at the chance to follow suit.

The 20-year-old Barnsley boy has experienced life at the top during a loan spell with then-Scottish Premier League club Gretna and now believes he is joining a side who can match his ambitions.

“It’s a big club and a bigger challenge for me,” said Meynell. “I can’t see why we can’t get promoted this season.

“Seeing Steve Torpey come here was also one of the reasons I joined because if it’s attracting players like him then it’s got to be a club that can do good things.

“It was very good at Gretna but that’s in the past now,” he added. “I’m holding onto it as memories and looking to the future.

“Hopefully I can get more experience next season by winning promotion with Telford. I’d love to get back to full-time football and back into the Football League – I’m hoping I can get there with Telford.”

l Chairman Lee Carter has once again moved to insist Telford will not be affected by the troubles at Irish satellite television company Setanta.

The company has gone into administration and ceased broadcasting in the UK at 6pm yesterday.

That will have an impact on the finances of clubs in the Blue Square Premier, North and South – with the Bucks now likely to lose the £15,000 the company paid to teams in the two regional divisions.

But Carter said: “The news will not put us into any real danger.

“We have yet to receive any written confirmation from the Conference that informs us of the full extent of the situation but we have to assume the worst.”
