Letter: Broadband tax unfair

LETTER: The so-called broadband tax seems dreadfully unfair. Many of the 34 million fixed telephone lines around Britain are used by people who do not even own a computer.
Why should they pay for a service they do not use?
Surely it would be fairer if computer owners could pay the levy in the form of a computer licence?
It remains to be seen whether the Government would be able to deliver a 2MB service nationwide, as is its intention.
Once this levy is brought into action, you can be certain that the tariff will increase year upon year. Welcome to the new “Windows” tax.

Why impose a levy like this anyway? It should be a choice and not a right to have broadband. Some people choose to remain with dial up ‘pay as you use’. This government seem to think that having a minimum speed is a requirement. Who is going to pay for everyone to have a computer installed? What about the maintenance of it? Private computer access is not a necessity of life but a nicety. I would love to take advantage of free broadband with Sky but cannot because they do not have their equipment in my local exchange, so what are the government going to do about that? As usual they do not give enough thought when they come out with these silly schemes.

I would suggest that as 87% of British households in 2006 owned a computer, broadband is really quite necessary (taken from http://www.statistics.gov.uk). For education, for communcation, for keeping up to date with an ever expanding digital world.
