Police speed clampdown
Tuesday 23rd June 2009, 11:53AM BST.
More than 200 motorists were caught by police in a clampdown on speeding drivers in and around Oswestry. Police today warned that they would continue to crack down on speeding drivers.
The majority of those stopped by officers were cautioned about their driving but 35 received £60 fines.
Officers took mobile speed cameras to various parts of the town and villages after residents complained that speeding traffic was a major concern.
During the campaign, a total of 35 drivers received a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence. A further 184 were cautioned about their future driving, the head of Oswestry police, Inspector Jim Stafford, revealed.
The speed enforcement checks were conducted earlier this month following fears raised by local residents at many Partners and Communities Together meetings across the district.
Inspector Jim Stafford said speeding traffic was invariably the main issue of concern for members of the public.
“Residents regularly expressed concern about road safety for both pedestrians and other road users as a result of motorists driving at excessive speed,” he said.
“We will continue to carry out speed enforcement checks on a regular basis. These will be conducted by officers at various locations in Oswestry and the surrounding villages.”
He added: “It’s in the interests of everyone to drive safely within the law and that includes staying within the speed limits.
“Our over-riding concern is to reduce road collisions and the numbers of people who get injured or killed as a result.”

Well done, but PLEASE PLEASE do something about the Pentons and Lloyds lorries (and Arriva buses, and other lorries) that thunder through Knockin from the A5 side who are most definitely doing well over the 40mph limit … so much so that my house rumbles as they go past!
