Hospital thief jailed for string of offences

Tuesday 23rd June 2009, 11:14AM BST.

A prolific burglar whose targets included a Shropshire primary school and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has been jailed for more than two years.

Paul Martin, of The Ridings, Bicton Heath, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday. The 31-year-old had previously admitted taking a handbag from an office at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on April 14. He had also admitted burgling a home in Falcons Way, Shrewsbury, on the same date, again stealing a handbag.

Martin also asked that three other burglaries at homes in Montrose Place and Butlers Gate in Shrewsbury and the Oxon Primary School in Shrewsbury be taken into account.

He was sentenced to 30 months in prison for the house burglary and 12 months, to be served concurrently, for the hospital burglary.

Mr Ian Durant, for Martin, who was suffering from drug and alcohol addiction, said: “These offences were committed out of sheer desperation.”
