Simpson plans on hold for squad

paul-simpson-41Manager Paul Simpson has conceded he may not have his full Shrewsbury Town squad in place for the start of pre-season training next week.

Town’s plans for the new campaign continue to be in a state of flux as they await answers from six players over contract extensions.

Those answers are due this week with Ben Davies, Kelvin Langmead, Chris Humphrey and Steve Leslie mulling over two-year deals and Darren Moss and Omer Riza contemplating one-year extensions.

But until the plans over the sextet become clear, Simpson has been forced to place his squad rebuilding on hold, leaving him with just 12 senior players and youngsters Andre Gray, Harry Hooman and Jake Simpson definitely signed up for next term.

Simpson has already brought in Jake Robinson from Brighton and Craig Disley from Bristol Rovers, but admitted he may not begin pre-season on July 1 with all his summer transfer activity completed.

“That is the way I’m thinking at the moment,” said Simpson. “It’s frustrating but we can’t do anything about it because the rules say we have got to give the players a month to consider their options.

“We just have to accept it and get on with it. We are still talking to the (six) players and their agents so that is a good sign.”

Town head off to Spain on July 4 for their pre-season training camp, with the first friendly coming against Northwich Victoria on July 15.

Why is Simmo moaning, if himself and the suits had not withdrawn the original contract offers he would not be in this mess.

The Club have created their own problems here.
