Shrewsbury adrift as poor form continues

Monday 22nd June 2009, 1:22PM BST.

cricket-ball34Shrewsbury’s Birmingham League premier division woes continued as they were left rooted to the foot of the table following a home defeat to fellow strugglers Bromsgrove.

The London Road men looked in pole position as they bowled Bromsgrove out for 141 inside 49 overs, Elliott Green and Rob Foster each claiming three wickets.

The response got off to a calamitous reply, with Tom Cox and Wes Robinson both falling cheaply as Shrewsbury slumped to 2-2.

Rob Foster and James Gale attempted to rescue the situation with 20 and 24 respectively, but the London Road men were dismissed for 108 to fall 20 points behind the safety line.

“We were batting well at the start of the season but the last few performances have been shocking and it’s something we need to address,” said captain Ed Foster.

“We should be able to chase down 140. The 20 points were there for the taking but we threw it away.”

Shifnal ended the last remaining unbeaten Birmingham League record by toppling division one leaders Stratford at Priorslee Road.

A home victory didn’t look on the cards as the hosts were left reeling on 101-9, Richard Murrell the only one of the top order to make runs in tricky conditions with 32.

But Tom Collins and James Kidson, who finished unbeaten on 23 and 14 respectively, helped Shifnal up to 150.

And captain Adam Shimmons then took centre stage by taking 6-32 as Stratford were dismissed for 70, Jonty Mountford taking three wickets bowling into the wind.

“We always knew we were a good enough team to beat the better sides in this division,” said Shimmons. “It was just a case of getting ourselves into the position to do it.”

Wellington moved back up to fourth thanks to a convincing six wicket triumph over Harborne at Orleton Park.

Mark Downes claimed two early scalps before Adam Byram and Wendal Wagner took four and three wickets respectively as Harborne were restricted to 165-9 – despite a late rally.

Simon Harding then provided the backbone of the Wellington reply with a patient 58, before 31 from Adam Byram, 26 from Sean Clingeleffer and a unbeaten 23 from Wagner saw Wellington over the line with three overs remaining and few alarms.

“It was a good, controlled performance,” said spokesman Terry O’Connor.

“We are pleased with the way we are playing and the position we are in.”
