Indie band crowned Star contest winners
Monday 22nd June 2009, 11:59AM BST.
Indie rockers The Jackdaws have been crowned Shropshire Star Battle of the Bands Champions of 2009.
The four-piece, who closed a dramatic final in front of hundreds of fans at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn on Saturday night, snatched the title after changing judges’ opinions with their final track of the evening, You Might Like It.
Up to that point Decadance in Berlin had been set to take home the big prize after wowing the panel with their 25-minute set.
But the very last song of the night proved to be a late turning point in the fortunes of the eventual winners, who only started playing together last year.
Bass player Lee Roberts, from Shifnal, said: “It’s all been a bit of a last-minute thing and we are just gave it our all and we were up for doing it.”
Singer/guitarist Rich Busby paid tribute to the facilities at Theatre Severn, which hosted the event in its 250-capacity Walker Theatre.
“It’s a nice venue and it has got a good vibe to it,” he said. “Everybody’s had a good night and they’ve been looked after really well.”
The judging panel had been set to hand Decadance in Berlin the title until the dying moments of the show.
The judges included Gair Davies, from Soundscape in Shrewsbury, Rob Andrews, from Andrews Law, and staff from SMC Sound & Vision store in Shrewsbury.
Saturday night’s show also featured sets from Deco, Callebra and Hill Valley High – all of whom impressed organiser James Shaw. He said: “All the bands were fantastic and played their hearts out in front of a superb crowd.
“It is just a shame there could only be one winner, because each and every band was just brilliant.
“And the great facilities at Theatre Severn proved we have a venue here in Shropshire that can host more of these shows.”
The winners scooped a host of prizes, including recording time at Soundscape Studios, 25 per cent discount on music equipment from SMC, legal advice from Andrews Law and a professional video shoot.
They also won a place on the bill of Parklive, which will be held in Telford Town Park in next month.

Callebra are a fantastic band and they were great on the night, the singer has an incredible voice. However, it was hardly a fix given that The Jackdaws changed judges opinions with their one, final song and it was a close run thing up to that point between them and Decadence in Berlin, who were also great. I love it how people claim a fix just because they have different tastes and might have liked another band more. I have to admit that the Busted-esque tunes of Hill Valley High didn’t do a lot for me but they played really well. I do know that The Jackdaws entered without even thinking of winning it, they just wanted to play at such a great venue, so fair play to them. They were awesome on the night.

There’s a much better local band: The Badgers. At the weekend, they played a great set.

Boom boom H…except it’s ‘sett’.

It can be set or sett, actually, merc. It’s one of my “stand up” gags so it doesn’t translate too well to the pen or keyboard.
