Campaigners hoping for 30mph limit
Monday 22nd June 2009, 12:58PM BST.
Villagers living beside a “dangerous” stretch of road near Market Drayton are hoping councillors will impose a 30mph speed limit, despite police deeming the proposal “unreasonable.”
Residents of Wollerton say the former A53 is used by speeding motorists, and warned it could be an accident blackspot.
The claim comes the day before Shropshire Council is due to hold an area committee meeting in Wem tomorrow at 3pm at Edinburgh House.
At the meeting, the committee is due to approve plans for the 30mph speed limit to be put into place, but police have lodged an objection.
A report to the meeting says police believe a 30mph restriction on the road would be “unreasonable” and would fail to acknowledge Department for Transport guidance.
Councillor Karen Calder, who represents the Hodnet Division on the Shropshire Council and lives in Wollerton, said: “It’s not a road you would want to walk down if you were not on the pavement, it’s much better since the bypass but traffic travels at 50 or 60 miles per hour, it’s just a very fast road, it’s too fast.
“There’s been deaths there, on one part of the road there’s still tributes to a little girl killed there in a nasty accident about five years ago.”
Maria Hawkaluk, police spokeswoman, said there were doubts over the bid.
“West Mercia Police has raised concerns that simply lowering the speed limit will not be enough to slow vehicles down,” she said.
