Bercow elected Speaker
Monday 22nd June 2009, 10:00PM BST.
Conservative MP John Bercow has been elected as the new Speaker of the House of Commons.
The Buckingham MP was a surprise winner of the race. Labour veteran Margaret Beckett had been considered a front-runner.
Mr Bercow – who is unpopular with members of his own party – won all three secret ballots for the role and will replace Michael Martin, who was forced to step down because of his handling of the MPs’ expenses scandal.
Mr Bercow said Parliamentary reform was necessary, but insisted the ”vast majority of Members of this House are upright, decent, honourable people”.
