Villagers mystified as roadside placards go
Saturday 20th June 2009, 10:17AM BST.
Villagers in Shropshire were mystified after a number of the advertising signs for their annual flower festival disappeared from the roadside.
Organisers of Worfield Flower Festival near Bridgnorth were amazed to find that half a dozen of the placards including an enormous 10ft by 4ft billboard have gone missing from various locations in the region.
Many of them were situated on the main routes such as the A454 to Wolverhampton and the A442 Telford to Bridgnorth road, directing motorists to the village.
The signs on the A442 are still in place, but along the route in from the West Midlands, they have gone missing. The large sign was taken from the roundabout where the A454 crosses the B4176. Several smaller signs along the A454 have also disappeared.
Maureen Turner, one of the organisers, said: “We put the signs out before the spring bank holiday weekend and many of them have been stolen. It is disgraceful. To replace them will cost several hundred pounds.”
She said organisers noticed the signs disappeared in the last week and, with the event fast approaching, they are concerned that it may affect the number of visitors to festival.
She said: “I think it is a sad sign of the society that we are living in. Even something for the church is affected by crime.”
The event, on June 27, 28 and 29, at St Peter’s Church in Worfield, is now in its 45th year. For details call (01746) 716665.
