Traders celebrate winning redesign
Saturday 20th June 2009, 10:25AM BST.
Oswestry’s market traders were celebrating today after the town’s indoor market won a makeover from top British designers, Sir Terence Conran and Tara Bernerd.
The Powis Hall beat off competition from nine other finalists to win the internet vote for The Times newspaper/Mydeco, your space competition. Last minute voting saw the Powis Hall surge ahead to poll 1,407 votes, 51 ahead of the second place Urban Academy in London.
There had been confusion over whether the judges would to have to meet again following the internet vote, but stallholder Mike Coppock, who entered the hall for the contest, confirmed today it was the winner.
“I have spoken to the organisers and they have said yes we have won. We will be contacted again on Monday to look at progressing the makeover,” he said.
“It is very exciting and thanks to hard working people who designed websites, made and distributed thousands of flyers and helped the campaign.”
Speaking before last night’s result, Sir Terence Conran said: “I would want to bring colour and light to Powis Hall to create a good atmosphere.”
Valentine Davies, a member of the Os21 group which backed the Powis Hall entry, said she was thrilled.
“The runner-up was backed by celebrity Ruby Wax. But Oswestry has shown that people power can beat celebrity power.”

What a victory. Something outside London is getting some decent design input for a change.
I have every confidence it will not be another ghastly Victorian period set which was what we got in the 1960s Shrewsbury market and which looks ridiculous.
