Town crier to announce new bishop

Saturday 20th June 2009, 10:21AM BST.

A town crier is being drafted into south Shropshire next week to announce the name of the next Bishop of Ludlow.

Peder Neilson is the official town crier of Bromyard, Herefordshire, but the Diocese of Hereford includes south Shropshire and Ludlow is borrowing him for the occasion.

He will declare the name of the new bishop at 11am on Tuesday.

Anni Holden, spokeswoman for the Diocese of Hereford said: “The town crier will be ringing his bell in the Market Square on Tuesday to make this very special announcement.

“We decided it would be colourful and entertaining to do it this way and will inform some of the locals of the new man for the job.”

The appointment is officially made by the Queen and is announced formally by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The name of the person chosen will not be made public until then.

The Bishop of Ludlow is the Suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of Hereford, a helper to Diocesan Bishop Anthony Priddis.

It is expected the new bishop will be consecrated in St Paul’s Cathedral, London, on September 29 with a service help at St Laurence’s Church, Ludlow, on October 4.
