Man jailed over boy’s crash death
Saturday 20th June 2009, 10:26AM BST.
A businessman has been jailed for 22 months after being involved in a crash near Ellesmere which led to the death of a young boy.
But Robert Gaunt’s family today said they were “devastated” that David Lunn, who hit the nine-year-old then drove off, had received such a “lenient” sentence.
The youngster, from Overton, died in hospital two days after being struck by two cars as he cycled on Wrexham Road.
David Lunn, 61, from Queens Park in Wrexham, was yesterday jailed for 22 months for hitting Robert whilst driving without insurance and a licence, and then attempting to pervert the course of justice by destroying evidence.
Mold Crown Court had heard Lunn’s car had hit Robert on March 19, throwing him into the path of another vehicle.
Robert died in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool of head and multiple organ injuries.
In a statement released through North Wales Police, Robert’s family commented: “Robbie would have grown into a giant of a man but his potential has been wiped out by a man who shouldn’t have even been on the road.”
