LA18PRIDE 35Teina McGarry is the toast of Shropshire, queen of the county’s unsung heroes.

The 44-year-old volunteer worker with family support service Home-Start was crowned Pride of Shropshire champion at a gala dinner and awards ceremony last night.

The event, held at Shrewsbury Town’s Prostar Stadium, was attended by more than 160 guests, including finalists, their friends and families and a host of dignitaries.

Teina, who also won the individual Learner Award, was in tears of joy and shock after the ceremony as she stood next to her fiance Colin Mapp, who beamed with pride.

Teina said: “I can’t believe it, I just can’t believe it.” She was one of nine category winners in the awards, which are a joint venture between the Shropshire Star, Shropshire Partnership and Market Drayton dairy giant Muller.

BBC Radio Shropshire presenter Eric Smith, who compered the event, said it showcased all that was best about Shropshire and feted some truly inspirational people.

He told the 27 finalists in the audience: “You are all winners.”
