Stay safe this summer

Sue in the Med? No, Wales, actually.

Sue in the Med? No, Wales, actually.

We have been promised that the weather is hotting up in time for Wimbledon – and hopefully for those long, school summer holidays.

A hot summer is just what we need to ease the worries of the recession. Many cash-strapped families will be getting the trusty tent out of the attic or shed this summer and the last thing they need is a wet week in Wales under canvas.

When the sun shines Wales and other parts of Britain can be as glorious as anywhere on the med and, with the Euro exchange rate so poor, actually cheaper this year.

We spent a recent long weekend on a campsite at Porthmadog when the sun shone from dawn till dusk and we even swam in the sea every day.

But the weekend also raised fears that a hot summer could bring tragedy. We tutted at youngsters being allowed to run along high harbour walls or wading out into the dangerously fast flowing tidal estuary. And I also had to use my lifesaving skills, learnt in school, for real when a young girl who had swum out to an island struggled to get back. Her father, standing on the shore was completely oblivious.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institute says it is expecting its beach lifeguards to be busier than ever this summer. Thankfully more and more beaches are now being patrolled.

All of us should remember that water, whether the sea, lakes or rivers, can be a killer.

Please play safe this summer. Take heed of warning notices and danger flags and take time out before you go away to read the RNLI’s beach safety guide on the internet.
