Orange Avenger in county
Friday 19th June 2009, 1:00PM BST.
A member of the ‘Orange Army’ which left England red-faced will be out to bring a black day for Shrewsbury in the Birmingham League premier division tomorrow.
Alex Kervezee, a member of the Holland team which registered a stunning victory over England in the opening Twenty20 World Cup match earlier this month, is due to be in the Bromsgrove side to take on Shrewsbury at London Road.
And there will be plenty at stake for two rivals rooted to the bottom of the table and 20 points adrift of their nearest rivals.
Shrewsbury’s availability is set to be enhanced in coming weeks weeks with Ryan Bishop and Tom Allin due to be playing their final Saturday game for Cardiff University this weekend, while the Shrewsbury School contingent are expected to become available regularly after tomorrow.
“The gap has opened up a little bit between ourselves and Bromsgrove and the rest of the league but I’m not too concerned about the bigger picture at the moment,” said captain Ed Foster.
“The batting has fallen away a bit over the last couple of weeks so that’s something we need to address.”
Shrewsbury’s team shows two changes with Joe Leach and Wayne Merrick, who has now moved to live in Qatar, replaced by Jon Anders and William Davies.
Wellington will be attempting to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Dorridge when they entertain Harborne in division one.
The Orleton Park men were dismissed for 141 when they chased 177 for victory, and spokesman Terry O’Connor admitted: “We will have to bat better than that.
“We are getting people making starts but not pushing on to convert them into big scores and that needs to change.”
Chris Sheperd and Simon Harding are back available and return at the expense of the absent Stuart Black and Ben Morris.
Shifnal entertain top-of-the-able Stratford with captain Adam Shimmons urging his side to re-discover top form.
“There are plenty teams worse than us in the league but we are not playing well at the moment,” he said.
“We have the players but we are not quite doing enough to get in a position to win games.”
Wicket-keeper Anthony Parker is unavailable so either the returning Tony Parton or George Collins will don the gloves, while Richard Murrell comes in for Ed Home.
