Bands set to do battle
Friday 19th June 2009, 9:11AM BST.
So, the Battle of the Bands’ finals night is upon us. It’s been a long time coming.
We launched our second Battle of the Bands contest three months ago and have immersed ourselves in the delights of up-and-coming groups ever since. We’ve been impressed by the sheer quality and diversity of talent.
Thrash metal, indie, folk, pop, soul, blues and all things in between are represented beneath the broad umbrella that is local music in Shropshire.
Choosing our finalists was a difficult task. Forty-six bands entered the contest and we could have happily organised a separate event to showcase others.
The five bands who will feature on Saturday night at Theatre Severn from 7pm are Callebra, Decadence In Berlin, Deco, Hill Valley High and The Jackdaws. They were selected by you, our online readers, who cast votes from a shortlist of 10. 2,299 votes were cast and the bands you liked made their way through.
So what can you expect on Saturday night? Host Tom Campbell, a DJ at The Severn FM 107.1 says it’ll be a storming night.
Each band will be given 25 minutes to play their favourite tunes, whether they are covers or compositions of their own. The judges will assess the audience’s reaction, each band’s potential and their present skills before making a decision on the winner.
Tom says: “It’s pretty straightforward. The best band, that generates the best response, will win.”
Which is where you come in. The five bands need your support. They will be playing in a 250-capacity venue and hope that as many people as possible cheer them on in front of a panel of three judges. It costs a fiver to get in, providing you buy your ticket in advance from Theatre Severn at www.theatresevern.co.uk or by calling the box office on (01743) 281281.
So there you have it. Great music at a ridiculously low price, followed by celebrations with the triumphant band.
You’re unlikely to get a better offer this weekend.
