Garner’s goal is Town shirt
Thursday 18th June 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Goalkeeper Glyn Garner is hoping to emerge from the shadows and mount a sustained challenge to re-establish himself as Shrewsbury Town’s No 1.
Garner endured one of the most frustrating seasons of his career in 2008-9, when he largely found himself playing second fiddle to Luke Daniels who spent the campaign on-loan from West Bromwich Albion.
Daniels has now returned to the managerless Baggies and, while Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson is on the hunt for a replacement goalkeeper, Garner is hoping he can state a case to be first-team custodian.
“Last season was disappointing but all you an do is keep your head down and work hard,” said the former Welsh international, who still has a season to run on his contract.”It’s the gaffer’s decision who plays and you just have to accept it.
“I’m sure another goalkeeper will come in but all I can do is my best in pre-season and see if it’s enough.
“Everybody wants to be playing and I love being at Shrewsbury.
“I live just around the corner and it really has become my home town club.”
With Garner determined to battle for his place next term, he will have the chance to work under new goalkeeping coach Dave Timmins who has returned to Shrewsbury after spells with Preston and Carlisle.
“I don’t know Dave at all so I’m looking forward to meeting him,” added the 32-year-old.
“You are never too old to learn and if you’re open to new ideas and prepared to listen, which I am, then you can always teach a dog new tricks.
Meanwhile, manager Paul Simpson has confirmed the squad will be heading to Spain for a pre-season training camp.
They will depart for Desert Springs for the second successive year on Saturday, July 4 – after returning to training three days earlier – and will remain until July 9.
“I’m delighted the chairman has allowed us to do this,” said the Town boss.
“The players know that they are going to be in for some hard work and it will be 7am, 10.30am and 6pm sessions.”
