Unemployment increases to 2.26 million
Wednesday 17th June 2009, 11:19AM BST.
The number of people unemployed in the UK rose to 2.26 million in the three months up to April.
Figures released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) today show the number of people out of work rose by 232,000 during the period.
The increase is considerably less than some analysts had predicted with suggestions the worst of the recession could be over for Britain.
Yesterday however, the TUC warned the unemployment rate would continue to rise until the end of the year pointing to the fact job losses historically lag behind improvements in GDP.
The ONS also revealed today the number of people seeking jobseekers allowance rose by 39,300 last month to 1.54 million.
