Rogers quits Welshpool

steve-rogersMuch travelled striker Steve Rogers has left Technogroup Welshpool to join Welsh Premier League rivals Prestatyn.

The departure of the Shrewsbury-based forward is a blow for Pool boss Huw Griffiths who is busy assembling his squad for next season.

“It’s disappointing to lose Steve who has been a fantastic servant for the club but, for financial reasons, he could not turn down Prestatyn’s offer,” he said.

“I’ve said to him if things don’t work out, he’s always welcome back here.

“But we’ve brought in another striker, Mark Stewart (Newi Cefn Druids) while we’re in talks with another forward.

“We have lost a few, but a lot players have signed for next season which says a lot for their commitment to the club,” he added.

Rogers is in the Welsh Premier’s top 15 goalscorers, with 114 goals from 239 appearances, and has spent the last six seasons at Welshpool Town.

He started his domestic career with Caersws, moving on to Oswestry Town, Newtown, Total Network Solutions and Cefn Druids.

Meanwhile, Pool expect to lose forward Martin McCubbin, on loan from Blackburn Rovers, while midfielder Phil Doughty has returned to Fleetwood Town following his loan spell at Maesydre.
