Book maze plan for town park

Wednesday 17th June 2009, 5:59PM BST.

booksaA labyrinth made out of 6,000 books is set to be created in Shrewsbury’s Quarry park next month as part of a major festival.

Environmental artists behind the maze-like piece – that will stretch for 120 metres – are urging the public for help with the project by donating their old books and volunteering to help build it.

The labyrinth is being described as a “thinking path” and will be created on July 4 as part of Shift Time, a festival of ideas.

Artists Wren Miller and Ray Jacobs, of Shrewsbury, say the artwork is designed to be creative and to stir the imagination. On July 5 it will be open for people to walk through.

Books can be left at the collection point shop on the middle floor of The Darwin Shopping Centre which will be open from Wednesday to Friday from noon until 2pm.

There will also be a collection box outside during non-opening hours.

What will happen to the books when they are finished with them? Are they to be re-distributed or thrown into landfill?
