Woosie’s back to his roots

Tuesday 16th June 2009, 12:29PM BST.

4664131Golfing legend Ian Woosnam was returning to Shropshire today to tee off his former club’s impressive new clubhouse.

Woosnam was due to open the new facilities at the Oswestry Golf Club this afternoon.

The former US Masters Champion is also a Ryder Cup winner, both as a player and more recently as a captain.

He began his golf as a boy at the Llanymynech Golf Club. But, as his reputation grew, Woosnam and his family joined the Oswestry Golf Club, where they have stayed ever since.

Peter Turner, club secretary and manager, said: “Ian’s brother, Gareth, is still the head greenkeeper at the golf club and his late mother Joan was a very involved member and player.”

“We are honoured to be welcoming Ian back to open our new clubhouse.”

The clubhouse features facilities for the club’s 700 members, including new changing rooms.

There is also a new golfing shop and outside a short game practice area.
