Tesco announces 4.3 per cent rise in sales
Tuesday 16th June 2009, 10:57AM BST.
Supermarket giant Tesco has announced UK sales rose 4.3 per cent during the first quarter of the financial year.
The increase has been linked with strong sales of gardening equipment and children’s toys, while the re-launched clubcard was also well received, the supermarket reports.
Total group sales rose by 12.6 per cent in the quarter up to May 30th, with petrol rising 9.7 per cent.
Commenting on the figure, Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco, said: “We’ve made a solid start to the financial year, maintaining good momentum in a challenging economic climate.
“We are also keeping a strong focus through the downturn on our long-term strategic objectives and I am encouraged by the impetus last year’s acquisitions — of Tesco Personal Finance and Homever in Korea — are now giving the group.”
Back in April Tesco announced profits of £2.95 billion, a record for a UK retailer.
