Millwall eyeing Town’s Ben Davies
Tuesday 16th June 2009, 1:38PM BST.
Shrewsbury Town midfield maestro Ben Davies could find himself the subject of interest from League One outfit Millwall.
On the day Town were handed a plum Carling Cup against Roy Keane’s Ipswich, Ian Taylor – football consultant for Davies – has confirmed Millwall manager Kenny Jackett is considering whether to step up their initial interest in the 28-year-old.
Davies’ future is shrouded in doubt as he is one of six Town players currently mulling over fresh contract offers from manager Paul Simpson.
Decisions from the sextet are due next week and, while Davies has continually stated he is happy at Shrewsbury, any chance to ply his trade at a higher level is sure to be tempting..
Taylor, the former Aston Villa midfielder, said: “Ben has spent a lot of time in League Two now.
“He believes he can play at a higher level – and he believes the likes of Millwall would be the perfect club for him.
“Ben is a free agent this summer so would be available without a fee.
“We are speaking to about four other clubs, including three in League One and one in the Championship.
“He has regularly scored double figures from midfield and those sorts of players are not easy to come by.
“I have spoken to Kenny about him, but we are not yet at the point where they have confirmed if they will take their interest further. I am due to speak to Kenny about that issue.”
Reports elsewhere have linked Davies with a move to Notts County, who are set to see their coffers swelled by a buy-out from a Middle East consortium.
Meanwhile, manager Paul Simpson is delighted Town have the chance to pit their wits against Ipswich during the week commencing August 10.
“It’s a club steeped in tradition and they have always played good football,” said the Town boss. “It’s a tough test but a great one for us to look forward to.”
