Jogger causes rail chaos

Tuesday 16th June 2009, 12:30PM BST.

A jogger caused chaos when she ran alongside a railway track in south Shropshire forcing a train driver to slam on the brakes.

The woman risked her life by running close to the live rails near Bucknell Railway Station just after 3pm yesterday, causing hours of delays for train commuters, a spokesperson for Network Rail confirmed.

The shocked driver was forced to carry out an emergency stop and was stunned when the woman, who had moved out of the way, apologised as she jogged past.

The woman, who was believed to have had an MP3 player at the time, jogged off in the direction of Hopton Heath.

Now British Transport Police is trying to trace the jogger after launching an investigation into the incident, Passengers on the Shrewsbury to Swansea service faced hours of delays as Network Rail drafted in another driver after the incident.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: “The driver was so shocked and shaken that he was unable to continue his journey.

“When we see someone on the track it is quite often a suicide situation,” she said.
