Delia criticised over lamb ad
Tuesday 16th June 2009, 11:45AM BST.
Farming officials Powys have hit out at the website of top British chef Delia Smith which is promoting lamb imported from the other side of the world.
The National Farmers Union (NFU) and the Farmers Union of Wales (FUW) say they are “disappointed” with the advert for not promoting British lamb.
But a website spokeswoman dismissed suggestions the advert campaign meant Delia favoured foreign imports.
John Davies, NFU Cymru food and marketing group chairman said “Welsh farmers are renowned worldwide for producing lamb to the highest quality.
“We adhere to the highest levels of animal health and welfare, and ensure that our land is farmed in the most environmentally friendly way possible.
“We are therefore disappointed to see the benefits of eating Welsh lamb have not been considered by Delia Smith, on this occasion.”
However, Jo Hill, Delia’s website editor, said: “It is ridiculous to suggest Delia would ever support New Zealand lamb to the detriment of British lamb.
“We are simply carrying an ad campaign for them and have frequently advertised English or British lamb on the site in the past.”
