Celebrations for hero Harry
Tuesday 16th June 2009, 3:45PM BST.
Former Shropshire man Harry Patch – Britain’s last surviving Tommy and a national hero – celebrates his 111th birthday tomorrow.
After serving in World War One, Mr Patch married his first wife Ada in Hadley in 1919. He also lived in Church Stretton and Gobowen.
Mr Patch now lives in a Somerset care home and puts his long life down to clean living, saying: “I neither smoke, drink nor gamble. The three sins, leave them alone.”
