Simpson to be loan arranger

paul-simpson-4Manager Paul Simpson has pledged to use the loan market to Shrewsbury Town’s advantage next season – after outlining his intentions to operate with a smaller squad.

The Town boss had a bulky squad for his first full season in charge at the Prostar Stadium after inheriting a host of players from the Gary Peters era.

More than 30 players were used in all competitions last term and Simpson is planning to reduce that figure by combining a smaller squad with some loan moves.

“I have got to get a squad of players we can utilise better,” said the Town boss.

“We had too many players last season and this time, my intention is to not run with as many players.

“I will definitely consider loans if I think it is right for us.

“I want to go with a smaller squad which will open the door to the likelihood of needing loan players.

“Last year we used more players than I would normally like but we had horrendous injuries, way more than we had planned for.

“I would hope we have a bit of luck on the injury front next year.”

Town are still waiting on decisions from the six members of last season’s squad offered fresh deals, leaving them with 12 senior players definitely signed for next season at this stage, a number which includes new arrivals Craig Disley and Jake Robinson.

That is supplemented by three first year professionals – Jake Simpson, Andre Gray and Harry Hooman – with boss Simpson contemplating adding a fourth into that category.

Simpson is also attempting to finalise plans for an overseas pre-season training camp, after heading to Spain last season.
