Shrewsbury Carnival – in pictures
Monday 15th June 2009, 2:15PM BST.
The streets of Shrewsbury came to life at the weekend thanks to the town’s annual carnival with thousands of revellers lining the parade route.
Families, youngsters and those of all ages turned out in the town centre on Saturday to soak up the glorious sunshine and enjoy a spectacular display of colour and music at the event.
The parade wound its way from The Quarry, and then along Smithfield Road, before later making its way up Castle Street and into the town.
Everything from The Jungle Book to The Flinstones and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was on show en route to the animated films and their stars-themed carnival.
Martin Wood, town crier, and Rory Hosty, carnival junior crier, led the procession which included about 25 floats, groups on foot and several marching bands. While the carnival princess and her attendants travelled in a horse-drawn carriage, followed by the floats.
Crowds also packed the town’s Quarry as visitors enjoyed attractions including Army vehicles and several bands. The carnival got off to a flying start with the arrival of a helicopter from RAF Shawbury and the Whitchurch Dog Agility group showcased their talented canines to the crowds.
Gill Puttock, carnival secretary, said it had been a huge success.
She said: “There were people as far as you could see down High Street and Shoplatch and it was great fun.
“I think this year’s event is probably on a par with previous years and maybe even a few more people were in High Street.
“It’s a fun day out for all the family, but at the same time it’s got a serious objective of raising money for charities and disadvantaged groups.”
Organisers will now enjoy a two-month break before starting preparations for next year’s carnival, to be held in September.

I took my 2 1/2 year old son to the carnival, it was a shame that a couple of the floats (vodka source being one) had to have the music as loud as possible frightening my son so much that he didn’t want to stay and watch the rest of the parade. It was that bad that you could feel the vibration when it went passed. Totally spoilt it for us!!!
