More than 60,000 take up car scrappage schemeFigures published today show more than 60,000 people have taken up the government’s new car scrappage scheme.

The arrangement sees drivers receive a £2,000 discount on a new car if they scrap their old one, as long as it’s at least ten years old.

Commenting on the figures, business secretary Lord Mandelson said: “Consumers know a good deal when they see one. These figures speak for themselves.

“Car manufacturers continue to report on the success of the scheme with rising sales. It is the boost that the industry needs.”

The scrappage scheme was announced in Alistair Darling’s Budget in April and today’s figures relate to the period up to June 7th.

The scheme is expected to run until March 2010 and predicted to affect around 300,000 motorists.
