Letter: Writer’s plight is appalling

LETTER: I was appalled to read about the plight of 35-year-old destructive aggressive rheumatoid arthritis sufferer Emma Suddaby who has now got to have her foot amputated and whose future quality of life seems to be of no interest to the NHS.
It was, however, pleasing to hear that Shrewsbury business owners Mark Harris and Sally Mills are running the Lake Vyrnwy half marathon to raise the money to buy her an electric wheelchair.
It is tragic enough that this talented, beautiful, young woman has had to suffer so much before even reaching the prime of her life, without the insult of being told by the NHS that they can only offer her a self-propelled wheelchair she won’t be able to operate because of her condition.
Surely the NHS should be concerned with general well-being as well as general health. Can it not see the psychological difference it will make to this poor lady if she can retain some independence instead of having to rely on others?
If other readers are outraged by Emma’s situation I would suggest they write in and register their disgust with the NHS and, as I have done, send a donation or sponsorship to the wheelchair appeal started by Mark and Sally, so that Emma can at least look forward to some quality of life after her amputation.
