Bowlers fail to spark as Shrewsbury suffer loss

Shrewsbury 1st cricket 3Shrewsbury’s struggles in the Birmingham League premier division continued as they suffered a heavy seven wicket defeat at Walmley.

Batting first, Shrewsbury looked well set to post a big target at 95-1.

But Australian Wes Robinson (28) was run out for the second time in his brief career at London Road following a mix-up with Ed Foster to spark a collapse for 115-6.

Foster went on to make 59 while Will Parton chipped in with an unbeaten 47 at the end as Shrewsbury finished on 204-7.

But that posed few problems for Walmley who coasted home by seven wickets with eight overs to spare.

“We didn’t bowl well enough,” admitted captain Ed Foster. “204 was below par overall but I thought it was still a total we could do something with.”

Wellington were left to rue a disappointing run chase as they slumped to a home defeat against Dorridge in division one.

The Orleton Park men had put themselves firmly in the box seat by restricting the visitors to 176-7 off 55 overs.

But Wellington were bowled out for 141 in the 42nd over, Mark Downes making 33 and Wendal Wagner 28 while overseas professional Sean Clingeleffer chipped a delivery to mid-wicket as he made 11 on debut.

“It was one that got away,” said spokesman Terry O’Connor. “Six of our batsmen got in without going on to make match-winning contributions which is disappointing and a lot of players got themselves out.”

Stuart Blount’s 49 and 30 from Iain Mills couldn’t save Shifnal from slumping to a 66-run defeat to Smethwick.

The Priorslee Road men were dismissed for 145 after Smethwick had made 211-9, James Kidson taking three wickets and Adam Shimmons and Mills two each.

St Georges remain in the relegation zone of division two after a disappointing home defeat to Cannock.

Steve Taylor’s 79 and 59 from Andy Johnson, who was battling a hamstring injury during his innings, helped the Dragons recover from 34-4 to 205-9 in their 55 overs.

But that proved some way short with Cannock sailing past their victory target with five overs and seven wickets in hand.
