New council leader chooses cabinet
Saturday 13th June 2009, 10:25AM BST.
The new leader of Shropshire Council has chosen his cabinet to help run the Tory-controlled authority. Only one name remains from the former Shropshire County Council cabinet.
That is Councillor Peter Nutting, member for Copthorne, who takes the portfolio for assets and performance.
Councillor Keith Barrow, the new council leader, will lead the group and be responsible for resources.
Looking after community working and customer service will be Councillor Gwilym Butler, member for Cleobury Mortimer, while Councillor Cecilia Motley, member for Corvedale, and Councillor Aggie Caesar-Homden, Ruyton and Baschurch member, have been put in charge of children and young people.
Councillor Simon Jones, for Shawbury, gets the adult services portfolio, Councillor Stephen Charmley, Whittington member, gets culture and leisure, and Councillor Mal Price, member for Battlefield, is put in charge of housing.
Councillor Dave Roberts, for Loton, is in charge of local environment and economy, while Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, member for Ludlow North, will look after strategic planning and transport.
Councillor Barrow, member for Oswestry South, said: “I think we have got a great team.”
The Tories won a landslide election victory last week, taking 54 of the 74 seats up for grabs.
Councillor Barrow was elected group leader in a secret ballot of members last Monday evening, defeating Councillor Malcolm Pate, Albrighton member and ex-county council leader who played a key role in taking Shropshire to unitary status.
The annual meeting of the new council takes place on Thursday.

good stuff
a complete clear out was needed
lets hope we get a new policy on the incinerator a new schools closure policy and a new fresh approach to congestion charging and parking too

lets hope fresh blood = fresh policies

Sarah- that was no clear out. I think you’ll find there was a Barrow and a Nutting in the previous cabinet.
They should remember that there are difficult financial times ahead and difficult decisions. Pate’s time may end up being seen as a golden period in which local services were relatively well funded and seen by outsiders as being amongst the best in the country.

Lets hope lots of money for everything we want especially if we are likely to vote Tory at the next election as result and that no one will notice who has to pay for it!

glad the old county lot are gone because they supported Unitary against the express wishes of the people of shropshire

i hope this means a rethink on controversal plans to burn rubbish in Shrewsbury which could harm ublic health and the environment ?

This is a clear out. During his period in office essential services were cut regularly to shore up legions of council officers – the adage was if it was run by SCC it was good – anyone else running anything had to be stamped on and eradicated. Very unusual for a Tory authority. I don’t think Pate did this out of political philosphy, he just did anything his officers told him to.
Outside of Shropshire our council services are seen as third world standard

lets hope that new environment chap opposes the incinetor then because we value clean air in shropshire

its good to clear the decks and break with the past, im glad all the County Councillors are gone, they were the ones who gave us the democratic deficit of Unitary, ignored the referedums on it, they also gave us higher park and ride price hikes, a shambolic OAP bus pass, privatisation of the rubbish collections, fortnightly rubbish, incinerators, congestion charging, rural schools closures, the sale of rural start up farms for young tenant farmers, pot holes all over the roads, they were responsible for 90% of the old council tax whilst the poor districts just collected the cheques, the County Councillors all deserved to be sacked, so well done Barrow on that
