Meole make move

Saturday 13th June 2009, 11:56AM BST.

bowls1It was the night Shrewsbury’s clubs made significant moves at the top of the Furrows Shropshire Premier Bowls League.

Determined champions Castlefields had five winners at Wrockwardine Wood, led by Simon Parsonage’s 21-5, to draw on aggregate.

They still lost ‘lost’ 8-6 in terms of scoreline, but it was a far cry from their 10-4 defeat at Wood last year.

And Meole Brace, fresh from a fine six point haul in a 20 chalk defeat at Bowring on Thursday, climbed to third place by questioning the title credentials of leaders Chester Road.

Impressive Meole beat them 11-3 (agg 40), Dan Williams winning 21-10 ahead of his away game for Shropshire juniors in Derbyshire tomorrow (see P54).

St Georges suffered a surprise 9-5 (agg 41) defeat at Bylet, while Wem USC beat visiting Ifton by the same score with a 24 shot agg.

Only away winners last night were Sir John Bayley.

They stunned Newport 8-6 (agg 10), Steve Burroughs winning 21-6 as they climbed above the Fishes and into fifth spot.

Childs Ercall are back on the bottom, despite picking up five points at Ford (agg 38), because Archibald Worthington returned to form with a 12-2 (agg 76) thrashing of Bowring that took them five points clear.
