Future of pool to be top priority

Saturday 13th June 2009, 1:23PM BST.

swimming-pool-1The future of Shrewsbury’s Quarry swimming pool will be one of the top priorities for the new Shropshire Council, the man in charge of the county’s leisure portfolio vowed today.

Councillor Stephen Charmley said he would be studying closely the options available for the centre when he takes up his new role as cabinet member for culture and leisure.

The Conservative said he was aware a decision needed to be made soon over the long-term future of the site.

Three options were suggested over what to do with the centre including refurbishing the existing site, costing about £9.6 million.

Other options include demolishing the building and replacing it with a new pool at a cost of £7.75 million or building an “out of town” site at a cost of about £7.6 million.

Councillor Charmley said: “I am aware there are issues that need to be sorted in Shrewsbury, but I don’t know too much yet about the detail.

“Sport and leisure facilities in the county are something I am very keen to address and that will be on the top of my list. I have got a briefing on Wednesday on all the immediate issues, but until then I haven’t got the full picture.”

In November last year, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council leisure managers completed a £250,000 revamp of the centre, claiming it would safeguard its future for a further five years.

the pool must be saved and kept in the town centre

    BUT…

it must be made more economical and this requires less water, this will also mean less energy use and chemical use and so its greener option

Why keep it in the town, why not move it to the outskirts which would be easier for people having to drive to get to, the current pool has very poor parking provision is so poor. This would help to take traffic out of the town, which should please the residents. Also the site could eb sold off which would help to offset the cost of the new pool development.
