County Queen’s Birthday Honours

Hard-working and selfless people from across Shropshire and Mid Wales have been rewarded in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, writes Rebecca Lawrence.

Professor Quentin John Leiper, from Bridgnorth, group chief engineer for Carillion plc and former president for the Institute of Civil Engineers, has been made a CBE for his services to the sustainability agenda. He said: “It’s a massive privilege and I feel very honoured.”

In all eight people in Shropshire and four in Powys have been made MBEs.

Among those honoured is 80-year-old Christopher John Thomas Quallington, known as John, for his services to heritage and to the community in Shropshire.

Mr Quallington, of Cruckmeole, was the founder of the Shropshire Building Preservation Trust and is a long-standing Pontesbury parish councillor and former chairman. He organises many charity events at his 16th century home.

John Henry Hughes, known as Harry, 83, a retired farmer of Rhydycroesau, near Oswestry, has been honoured for services to local government and community in Powys.

Ministry of Defence manager Caroline Jayne Vaughan, who works as a civilian at the Defence Support Group in Telford, has also been made an MBE.

Much Wenlock’s John Francis Henderson was awarded for services to the community of Rushbury while Michael Jarrett, of Tipton, West Midlands, formerly the Children’s Centres county manager for Shropshire County Council, was honoured for services to local government.

Vanda Maureen Dawson, of Craven Arms, was honoured for services to the community, especially for her work with the Brownies and Guides, while Ann Lucy Mary Harpwood, of Old Radnor, near Presteigne, was honoured for her services to an animal charity. She launched Justice for Dogs in 1993.

William Lloyd Williams, of the butchers of the same name in Machynlleth, has also been awarded an MBE for services to the meat industry.

He said: “We work very hard and I hope to continue serving the people of this town.”

Sangeeta Elizabeth Singh, originally from Mid Wales, founder of the Duke of Cambridge gastropub in Islington, was honoured with an MBE for services to the organic gastropub trade.

Six service personnel at RAF Shawbury have also received various awards in recognition of their exceptional contributions and work at the airbase and for the Royal Air Force.

Flight Lieutenant Paul (Dick) Barton, Flight Lieutenant Kevin Place, Flight Lieutenant Dave Masterton, Master Aircrewman Paul Cruttenden, and Geoff Stephenson and Alaistair Reid, two helicopter instructors working on 660 Squadron, all received honours.
