Cosford gears up for visitors and Vulcan
Saturday 13th June 2009, 10:42AM BST.
Organisers of the 2009 Cosford Air Show were gearing up for the arrival of 50,000 visitors to tomorrow’s event – and fingers are crossed for one special visitor to make an appearance.
The only Vulcan aircraft left flying in the world could be at the show at RAF Cosford.
The plane needs to have flown at least once following its winter service, which it has yet to do, but organisers of the show believe there is still time.
Roger Phillips, assistant air show coordinator, said: “We are still hoping, we are still waiting for it to fly following its winter servicing, our fingers are crossed.”
The four-engine nuclear bomber was designed in 1947 in response to the post-war threat of the Soviet Union.
Richard Clarke, spokesman for the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, said: “She is an iconic aircraft from the Cold War that helped during that dangerous period and she is the last one left flying in the world.
“She is very, very popular as a display aircraft and the design of the aircraft, with the Delta wing, is a real show stopper.”
Meanwhile when the RAF’s freefall parachute team drops into the show tomorrow, one of its key officers will be returning to familiar surroundings.
Flight Lieutenant Louise Buxton, who is in her second season as leader of the team known as The Falcons, used to be stationed at the Shropshire airbase.
The 27-year-old will either be one of the nine parachutists dropping into the showground in the afternoon, or helping out in the “dropping zone”.
For tickets visit offices of the Shropshire Star, the Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford or branches of the Mid Counties Co-Operative Society. Also visit www.cosfordairshow.co.uk or call 0844 561 1897.

Cosford Airshow, absolute RUBBISH, had my tickets for over two months, went today and didn’t get in. Spent 3.5 hrs in a traffic jam only to hear on the radio the car park was full!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why sell more tickets then they can accommodate!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your name is on the ticket which was never used as we sat in a traffic jam for over four hours. We joined the queue at nine o`clock to tour the delights of Codsall and Albrighton. The wife in the end was house hunting from the car, the grandchildren were in meltdown i might need to have counselling. Do i apply to the Shropshire Star for the refund so we can go on a proper day out.

You should have got there early. We pulled off an empty M54 at 8:25am. It then took us about another 10 minutes to get in. Excellent show. Could have done with a few more current RAF fast jets like the RAF role demo, but government cuts put paid to that. Excellent to see the Vulcan again after so many years.

On the ticketing front, maybe they need to go ticket only like the Royal International Air Tatto at Fairford?
As I said it was easy to get in if you went early, but getting out at the end was another matter. We waited an hour after the flying display had ended, but it still took another hour to get off the base.

Myself & my boyfriend went to the airshow & it was amazing. The only problem with big shows like this is you do need to get there early. We were on base at 930 and was told mid afternoon that the motorway was jammed!!
Sorry to those who missed it, But it was amazing!
