MP in rail station talks
Friday 12th June 2009, 10:50AM BST.
Daniel Kawczynski has met Arriva Trains Wales managers to urge them to spruce up Shrewsbury’s railway station. He met the firm’s commercial director Mike Bagshaw.
The MP has asked him to visit the station incognito.
He said: “I will be highlighting the scandalous state of Shrewsbury Railway Station, which he has responsibility to maintain and manage more effectively.
“I will be showing him the buddleia growing out the walls and the weeds on the tracks, which are never swept and the pigeon mess and everything that has turned our station into a building not fit for Shrewsbury’s status.
“Mr Bagshaw has promised he will visit the station with me and will accompany me on the train from Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton.
“I will ask him to come incognito. I have said I will not support the licence and franchise of Arriva Trains unless he can prove he is serious about maintaining and cleaning Shrewsbury station.”
Mr Bagshaw said he had a good meeting with Mr Kawczynski. He said: “I told him performance has improved and we are running a reliable service between Shrewsbury and Birmingham.”
Mr Bagshaw said Arriva was Network Rail’s tenant and responsible for the platforms. NR is responsible for the buildings and track.
He said: “We have been pressuring Network Rail very strongly to deal with the weeds.”
He added: “I think Shrewsbury station is a nice station and we have been working hard to improve the facilities there.”
A spokeswoman for Network Rail said nearly £1 million had been put aside to spend on the station. She said now performance times had been improved, the company would be able to concentrate on the station.

The primary use of this station is to take people from Shrewsbury to the outside world but it is a nightmare to get to this station, park one’s and there are no facilites to leave my horse. Why not think outside the box and close down this station and rebuild on the outskirts, maybe near the Harlescott park & ride? There’s a train track nearby.

I liked Mr Kawczynski’s comment:
“I have said I will not support the licence and franchise of Arriva Trains unless he can prove he is serious about maintaining and cleaning Shrewsbury station.”
Wow – I bet that had Arriva’s knees knocking!
His opinion and support would count for *nothing* – in most cases, franchise awards these days seem to be about who can operate them most cheaply. I bet Arriva would just love to spend millions on the station – and then claim it back ‘on expenses’.
Oh wait, I forgot – only MP’s can do that :-)
Honestly, these MPs must think people are stupid to believe all their hubris. And it isn’t necessarily Arriva that is the bad guy in this case either – it’s just an easy target at the moment.

Mr K asks the director to attend incognito to join him to inspect the site.
So the staff aren’t going to notice two men, one who is about 6’9″ who uses every opportunity to promote his work as well as being accompanied by a gaggle of photographers to record the event? Good thinking Sherlock.

I think that before asking others to ‘clean up’ the MP should put some more effort into cleaning up his and other MP’s ‘mess’. He boasted that he and the other MP’s from Shropshire were going to publish their expenses so far nothing. But he is perhaps typical of the ‘do as I say not how I act’ attitude of most politicians these days.

Its just another oppertunity for our MP to make a lot of hot air and get his picture in the paper. Every time he opens his mouth he come across as a silly little schoolboy.
