Footage of life in town

Friday 12th June 2009, 12:06AM BST.

A screening featuring archive film footage of Shrewsbury including an early visit by King George V in 1914 and the Shrewsbury flying pickets – including actor Ricky Tomlinson – will be shown on June 18.

The event is part of the Belle Vue Community Arts Festival and takes place at the Wakeman School Arts College at 7pm, and shows footage from 1914 to the early 1970s.

The screening has been organised by BVCAF with the Media Archive for Central England, based at the University of Leicester, and Wakeman director Mike Griffiths.

The material to be screened is part of a collection of archive film held by MACE.

It includes silent footage of Shrewsbury from before the First World War to the post-Second World War period, as well as more recent material shot by the former ATV television company, which provided local and regional news coverage for the Midlands from the 1950s to the 1980s.

BVCAF committee member Ian Gasse said: “The material we’ve selected shows aspects of life in Shrewsbury over more than 60 years, ranging from an early visit by George V in 1914 to the infamous trial in the 1970s of the building workers known as the Shrewsbury Pickets, one of whom subsequently became better known as the actor Ricky Tomlinson.

“The footage also features the inter-war Shrewsbury Carnival, outdoor entertainments in the Quarry and the town’s celebrations for the coronation of George VI, preparations for the Second World War, the freezing of the River Severn in 1947, the demolition of the Old Market Hall, the last days of the town’s Smithfield Market, threats to local railway services, the up and downs of Shrewsbury Town Football Club and, of course, the experience of flooding.”
