Residents in call for MP to back road safety plea
Thursday 11th June 2009, 9:34AM BST.
Residents living along a road near Oswestry say they are plagued by drivers ignoring speed limits and double white lines along the busy main route.
The road from Llynclys to Llanrhaeadr winds its way through hamlets and villages in the Tanat Valley and is one of the main routes into Wales from Shropshire.
But residents of Porthywaen and Llanyblodwel are so worried about dangerous driving that they want their MP to help campaign for a clampdown on dangerous motoring.
Villagers were due to meet Owen Paterson, Conservative MP for North Shropshire, today to tell them of their worries.
Llanyblodwel and Porthywaen Parish Council has spent years trying to get road safety measures on the stretch of road.Gail Holloway, council clerk, said the road through the two villages was almost entirely double white lines – meaning no overtaking.
“Drivers are constantly ignoring the road marking and overtaking in really dangerous places,” she said.
“Speed limits are also being broken all the time.
“It is a nightmare for people who live in this area which is quite heavily populated.”
She said the road was a well known, picturesque route into Wales and was also used as an alternative route for people driving from the Midlands and Shropshire to the coast.
“At this time of year it obviously gets busier,” she said.
“One of our parish councillors has been preparing a dossier on the accidents and near-misses that have taken place.”
Mr Paterson said he was keen to hear from villagers about the problems they were having along the stretch of road.
