Keeper top of the Town hit list
Thursday 11th June 2009, 11:56AM BST.
A goalkeeper has been placed at the top of Shrewsbury Town’s current shopping list – as manager Paul Simpson faces a frustrating wait to further strengthen other departments.
The need for a goalkeeper has been heightened with the return of Luke Daniels to West Bromwich Albion and the departure of Jasbir Singh.
That leaves Glyn Garner as the only shot-stopper on the Town books, something Simpson is keen to address sooner rather than later.
But the hopes of the Town boss of adding further reinforcements imminently, to sit alongside Craig Disley and Jake Robinson, look set to be dashed as he awaits answers from six players he has offered new contracts to.
Ben Davies, Kelvin Langmead, Chris Humphrey, Omer Riza, Darren Moss and Steve Leslie are all still mulling over fresh deals and have a further two weeks to reach final decisions.
“It’s going to be a frustrating couple of weeks because although I’m getting positive feedback from the six, nobody has actually put pen to paper,” said Simpson.
“I can’t do anything until I know about them because that could be six more positions (in the squad) that could possibly be taken.
“The area I do need to bring in is a goalkeeper and I’m looking to do that now.
“I’ve been working over the last few weeks speaking to different people and trying to get the right one.
“But the likelihood is that barring a goalkeeper, there probably won’t be anything else until we know about these other six players.”
Simpson continues to closely monitor the situation at West Brom, whose manager Tony Mowbray is being heavily touted with a move to Celtic.
But, at this stage at least, the chances of Daniels returning to the Prostar Stadium after spending last season on loan appear slim.
“I spoke to Tony before there was any mention of him moving and the thought was that Luke was going to go back to them and try and push to be involved as one of their first choice keepers,” added Simpson.
“That hasn’t changed and I’m still looking at that. At this moment in time, I’m of the view that we need to get someone who is our goalkeeper and we don’t have the risk of them being recalled.”

Is’nt it about time the six who have yet to sign get there act together and do it. Strikes me there edging thier bets and not really showing a true commitment to Shrewsbury Town. If thats the case I’m not sure I want them around.
