A 37-year-old man who was rescued from his burning home in Shropshire along with his pregnant partner and her two children has died.

Adrian Hemming, 37, died at Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital last night, after suffering serious burns in the blaze which ripped through the detached house in Leegomery, Telford.

Mr Hemming, along with his pregnant partner and one of her two children, was rescued from the fire in Sunderland Drive by heroic neighbours.

The second child was rescued by firefighters.

The 34-year-old woman, who remains critically ill in hospital today, has been named by neighbours as Andrea Partington. Her son Jack, nine, is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, while daughter Regan, six, is comfortable in hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Edwards said: “This is a sad development and the thoughts of the officers investigating this case remain with the four victims rescued from the house, and their families and friends.

“As we stated yesterday, a major investigation has been launched into this fire as it does appear to be suspicious.

“At the present time our inquiries are ongoing as we attempt to gather evidence that will help us piece together the exact cause of this distressing incident.”

He added: “We remain eager to trace anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious around the time of the fire or anyone who may have information relating to it.”

Councillor Pat Smart, chairman of Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council said: “My heart goes out to the family and I just hope that the mother recovers and she and her children can make some sort of life for themselves after this.”

She added: “Thank God for the neighbours, their courage and their bravery in getting the family out.”

Both children are pupils at Apley Wood Primary School in Leegomery.

Headteacher Allyson Brow said: “Everyone at the school is deeply concerned and shocked about what has happened.

“We wish the whole family well in their recovery and hope Jack and Regan will be back with us soon.”
