Rallying call to save Royal British Legion clubs

Must you tell us that?
Thursday 11th June 2009, 9:30AM BST.
Do you remember the phrase “nanny state”? asks David Burrows.
With all the mud slung in the direction of the Government recently, it’s perhaps easy to forget that not too long ago we were all having a go at them for trying to tell us how to live.
Well it appears that, like many things, there has been something of drip-down effect on our day-to-day lives.
And it is my sad duty to report the Shropshire Star is as culpable as anyone … even when it comes to our ablutions.
We’re all used to the “Now Wash Your Hands” notices in bathrooms. A non-too-subtle reminder that spreading your germs around the place is probably not a good thing.
But someone at Shropshire Star Towers (that’s not it’s real name, by the way. Please don’t address your letters in such a manner) has decided there are other things we need to be told when we go to the loo.
Signs are popping up all over the place.
Apparently someone (or there maybe more than one culprit. Perhaps there is a tariff for when a problem becomes sign-worthy) is unaware that after you have turned on a tap and Please-Washed-Your-Hands, it’s probably best to avoid a potential flooding problem.
Hence we now have a Make Sure The Taps Are Turned Off Properly notice tacked to the mirror.
However, quite why someone needs to be told Do Not Put Chewing Gum In The Urinals is beyond me. What adult needs to be told that?!
Presumably the same adult (or adults) who sparked the latest notice: Flush Toilet After Use!
Fortunately, I have yet to go into the bathroom after the person who isn’t aware that’s what you need to do.
I’m hoping maybe the Shropshire Star is alone in the need to write down what shouldn’t need to be said.
Actually, I’m not.
I’m hoping you’ve got some better ones – ’cause let’s face it, that’s going to make the comments page a lot more fun, isn’t it?
