Jake keen to form dynamic duo
Wednesday 10th June 2009, 1:00PM BST.
New signing Jake Robinson has revealed the chance to form a deadly strike partnership with Grant Holt was one of the major factors in attracting him to Shrewsbury Town.
Former Brighton forward Robinson penned a two-year-deal with Town yesterday after passing a medical at the Prostar Stadium.
And he is already eyeing a link-up with Holt, who topped the scoring charts with 28 goals last season despite the lack of a regular partner.
“Playing alongside Grant was one of the things that encouraged me to come up here because I think it could be a partnership that works really well,” said the 22-year-old.
“I always look to get on the shoulder of the last defender and I’m looking to get in behind and score goals so it’s different to Grant.
“We will have to see how we link up in pre-season but it could be a really good partnership.”
Robinson – who scored a penalty in the shoot-out for Brighton against Shrewsbury in the JPT last season – admitted the move had come at the right time in his career.
“I had been at Brighton since I was 11 so I had probably become a little bit stale there,” he added.
“I had not been in the plans during last season and was on loan at Aldershot at the end.
“I thought to reignite my career and move to the next step I had to move away and that’s what I have done.
“I think the way things went here last season shows this is a team that will be pushing for League One.”
Robinson also revealed the persistence of manager Paul Simpson was another significant reason in his decision to join Town when other League Two clubs had expressed an interest.
“The manager was a massive influence because in January and February he called me and said he wanted to take me on loan,” he added,
“Unfortunately, that didn’t work out at the time but the fact that he called me and told me he liked me as a player was good.
“And when the chance came at the end of the season, he was one of the first ones on the phone to speak to me again so it was an easy decision.”
