Black widow stowaway surprise

Wednesday 10th June 2009, 8:39AM BST.

black-widow-spiderA Mid Wales couple found an uninvited guest when they unpacked following their move from the USA – a deadly spider.

Mike Newman, of Kinnerton, near Presteigne, said the female black widow spider stowed away for a month inside a hose pipe he had packed on a container ship from San Francisco to the UK.

The eight-legged intruder was only discovered when a woman from a removal company unpacked for Mr Newman and his wife Trish following their move to Mid Wales this week.

Mr Newman, 53, said: “The woman from the removal firm was very calm to be fair.

“I had wrapped the hose pipe before we left and I would have taken more care had I known what was lurking inside.

“During our time in the US we’d never seen a black widow, although living there for some time we had made ourselves aware of what one looked like. We knew what it was.”

After being caught in a jam jar, the spider was sent to an exotic pets specialist to be cared for in Newport, South Wales, and has now been forwarded to a reptile centre in Bristol.
