Shrewsbury Town today wrapped up their second close season signing by luring striker Jake Robinson to the Prostar Stadium.

The 22-year-old, who was released by Brighton at the end of last season, completed the formalities on his move this lunchtime with a medical.

He has signed a two-year contract and manager Paul Simpson is delighted to have finally landed the pacy forward, who went through the youth system at Brighton and became the club’s youngest ever scorer at 16.

“Jake is a player who I’ve liked for a number of years and I’ve kept an eye on how he’s been developing,” said the Shrewsbury chief today.

“He’s a young lad who got into the Brighton side at a very young age, played a number of games for them and did very well.

“He was always thought of as a bright young player but just seemed to lose his way a little bit and fell out of favour.

“I thought he did well when he came on against us in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game here last season and I tried to bring him into the club before the loan window closed, but we couldn’t manage to do that.

“He then went to Aldershot (on loan) and did very well, and got to know this league.”

Robinson, whose best season for the Seagulls came when he scored 12 times in 2006-7, actually had two spells at Aldershot – including the one this season.

The Shots were keen to recruit his services on a permanent basis but boss Gary Waddock admitted the Hampshire outfit had been unable to match the terms on offer at the Prostar Stadium.

Simpson identified a striker as one of his summer targets as he attempts to find a regular partner for last season’s leading scorer Grant Holt.

And he has been left light in that area after releasing Moses Ashikodi and Nick Chadwick, while he is still waiting to learn if Omer Riza will accept the one-year contract offer on the table.

He also had Richard Walker on loan for the whole of last season but decided against pursuing that any further when the campaign came to a conclusion.
